University Wi-Fi - tempest

For technical support call the University Technology Support Center

The University’s ‘tempest’ SSID is an historical Service to be eventually replaced by the eduroam SSID.

To connect, users must associate to the SSID and connect to any web site to complete a captive-portal based process using their “” credentials to gain access on a per-device basis.

‘tempest’ has no layer 2 or "over the air" security, but users are still protected by the standard transport layer security (TLS, which replaced the older "SSL") which implements strong encryption between the user and sites which support the standard (University of Maine System services, e-commerce sites, social media, etc...).

As of August 15th, 2018, Tempest is a lesser service and will be decommissioned at some future date yet to be determined.
